Terrible Chart Tuesday – Excel 3-D Clustered Column Chart

Welcome to another edition to Terrible Chart Tuesday.  Here we see an example of what I think is a Terrible Chart that was create in Excel.

What do you think?  Let me know in the comments below.

This chart is related to a project that was recently released and this was tracking open issues for the project.Chart TuesdayAs I look at this chart, I don’t know if I can easily tell if things are getting worse, better or remaining the same.

Because of the tilt of the vertical axis, for November 11, did you think that the cases were less than the values for November 8?

Most dashboard designers don’t like to use 3-D Charts in their presentations because they can distort the data or make it more difficult to read quickly.  What do you think of 3-D charts?  Do you use them?  Do you think they are confusing?

In this chart, I also see an issue with the columns not reaching the major horizontal grid lines.  If you are also having this issue with your 3-D Column Chart in Excel, check out this post to learn how to fix it:

How-to Fix an Excel 3D Chart so that it Matches the Gridlines

If you didn’t know that there are things you can’t do in Excel 3-D Charts, then you should check out this post:

So what do you like or not like about this chart?  Let me know in the comments section below.  Finally, send me a contact form below if you have a terrible chart example that we can share.
